Thursday

on the spur...

this morning th5 asked pat if sometime he could take her to the beach to look for hermit crabs. when she ran off to play he turned to me and said 'let's wake up on the beach tomorrow'... san diego is an 8 1/2 hr. drive. we've cashed in our change jar and have just enough to get us there and back... head out by 12 - get there around 9. leave before 12 tomorrow so he caan get back for a gig... well, on the other hand - maybe a beach closer is better. We are, after all, going to settle for the lake a few hours away... just the same - we're blowin' this joint for a bit... nice.

one more cup of coffee

the first trip-token i gave pat was this medalion. i had to buy a bottle of rum i couldn't afford and couldn't drink (being preggers) just to have it. on the front is Hoti - the Zen patron saint and protector of little children, fortune tellers, and bartendenders. all to fitting... tomorrow he heads out again. he will be missed. and while he is away i will be singing dylan to the kids...
Your breath is sweet
Your eyes are like two jewels in the sky.
Your back is straight, your hair is smooth
On the pillow where you lie.
But I don't sense affection
No gratitude or love
Your loyalty is not to me
But to the stars above.
One more cup of coffee for the road,
One more cup of coffee 'fore I go
To the valley below.
Your daddy he's an outlaw
And a wanderer by trade
He'll teach you how to pick and choose
And how to throw the blade.
He oversees his kingdom
So no stranger does intrude
His voice it trembles as he calls out
For another plate of food.
One more cup of coffee for the road,
One more cup of coffee 'fore I go
To the valley below.
Your sister sees the future
Like your mama and yourself.
You've never learned to read or write
There's no books upon your shelf.
And your pleasure knows no limits
Your voice is like a meadowlark
But your heart is like an ocean
Mysterious and dark.
One more cup of coffee for the road,
One more cup of coffee 'fore I go
To the valley below.

and again the rain. waterfalls and mudd-pies. the other day i had the strangest sensation of being in a foreign land - on a different planet. it took a few minutes to realize what it was... the sun was out.

Thursday

my girl...

... started caribbean steel drum lessons on monday. starts soccer next monday. today's child-built vocabulary words were - project. bobcat. stripey-cat. telephone. these she wanted to learn - sounded them out and figured out the spellings. she set up her school desk today and sharpened pencils...
at our first 'learning collective' meeting the kids created this. tonight she learned all about snails at the park and brought two home as pets. henry and rolendria.
a little bit o paint and we have a new cat in the house. sometimes in the midst of the day i forget that things actually ARE getting done. looking back i can't deny - we've had a good day. it's been a good week. and this is what it's all about... my girl is my reminder.

have i mentioned the rain? an old fridge takes a trip about a mile down the street.
in two weeks we've had more rain than our annual average.
buckets in downspout. short amounts of time. lot's of washout.
down the mountain creeks a runnin'
waterfalls and swimming holes.
glorious glorious MUDD!

fungus

spore growing . bit by bit. day by day. trudging along. seemingly unappreciated. poisonous even.
beauty of complexities. underside hidden. where the truth lies. in the folds. hard to reach. dangerous to ignore. okay to explore...
